Driving is a daily necessity for many people, but unfortunately it can take a toll on your skin. Whether you’re on the road for a daily commute, running errands, or going on a road trip, the cumulative effect of sun exposure during these drives can lead to premature aging, wrinkles, sunspots, and an increased risk of skin cancer. However, with a few simple precautions, you can keep your skin safe and healthy while on the road.
Apply Sunscreen Before Hitting the Road
Just because you’re inside a car does not mean you’re safe from the sun’s harmful rays. UV radiation can penetrate through windows, leaving your skin vulnerable to damage. There are two types of UV radiation from the sun that can damage your skin and lead to skin cancer. Tanning and premature aging are often caused by UVA rays, whereas sunburn is often secondary to exposure to UVB rays. All types of commercial and automobile glass block the majority of UVB radiation and windshields can block over 90 percent of UVA radiation. However, untreated side windows and sunroofs are typically made of tempered glass that make it easier for UVA radiation to penetrate.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen that covers both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 30 or higher to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, arms, and hands. Reapply every two hours, especially on long drives.
Wear Clothing that Protects Your Skin
Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants to cover up exposed skin while driving. If you can, try to opt for clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for added sun protection.
Use Sunshades or Tint Your Car Windows
Reduce direct sunlight exposure by using sunshades on your car’s windshield and windows. These accessories can help block UV rays.
Keep Your Car Windows Rolled Up
UV exposure is much higher through an open car window than a closed one. Try to keep the windows rolled up to limit your sun exposure.
Hydrate Your Skin Regularly
Driving for extended periods can lead to dehydration, which can leave your skin looking dull and dry. Drink water regularly to stay hydrated from the inside out.
Cleanse and Moisturize Your Skin Daily
Remember to cleanse your skin after a long drive or commute to remove any buildup of sweat or dirt. Use a gentle cleanser followed by a moisturizer to replenish lost moisture and keep your skin hydrated.
Look for products with antioxidant ingredients like vitamin C and E to combat free radical damage caused by environmental stressors.
Protect Your Skin Everywhere You Go
Driving doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the health and appearance of your skin. By following these tips, you can protect your skin from the harmful effects of sunlight and prolonged sitting in the car. Be sure to prioritize your skin’s health and safety, so you can enjoy many more radiant journeys ahead.
