ThermiVa for Vaginal Rejuvenation
What Is ThermiVa?
ThermiVa® is an energy-based medical device that is designed for effectiveness and comfort in treating laxity in the outer and inner vaginal tissues. This allows women to have a nonsurgical option in addressing aesthetic and functional changes in the vulvovaginal areas.
ThermiVa uses RF (radio frequency) energy to restore feminine wellness. Radio frequency works especially well on tissue that is naturally well hydrated, as labial and vaginal tissue is.
During ThermiVa treatment, the energy is controlled through constant feedback between the thin, slightly S-shaped device and the generator. The generator adjusts to keep the temperature setting constant during treatment.
This thoughtful design – with the patient’s comfort in mind – is the first time a doctor has been able to perform vaginal rejuvenation with a preset temperature and precisely controlled energy.
Who Is a Good Candidate for ThermiVa Vaginal Rejuvenation?
Women who have noticed vaginal changes due to childbirth, menopause, aging, or medical treatments are all ideal candidates for this treatment. ThermiVa can also be combined with other women’s health procedures, such as the O-Shot®, to address multiple intimate wellness concerns.
Vaginal rejuvenation treats issues ranging from restoring the appearance of the vagina and vaginal tissue to improving function related to women’s sexual health.
Women who are good candidates for ThermiVa typically have the following symptoms:
• Mild stress urinary incontinence (bladder leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or other sudden pressure)
• Overactive bladder
• Vaginal atrophy after menopause (dryness and irritation)
• “Looseness” after childbirth
• Elasticity issues due to aging
• Difficulty with orgasm
• Atrophic vulvovaginitis due to menopause or cancer treatments
Women with urinary or bladder issues seek Thermiva if they want a non-surgical option or want to avoid anti-cholinergic medications.
Why Does Dr. Susan Mikaelian Choose ThermiVa for Her Patients?
While researching and evaluating the treatment options available for women’s sexual health and intimate wellness, Dr. Mikaelian appreciated the radiofrequency energy-based options over laser options. Unlike lasers, the ThermiVa energy device can treat the vulvovaginal tissue and the labia, and there is no downtime after treatment since it's non-ablative (does not damage tissues).
I wanted an option for women that didn’t involve hormones, has high patient satisfaction, and delivers results. ThermiVa provides effective sexual health treatment for women. - Dr. Sue Mikaelian
Dr. Mikaelian sought out additional training with Dr. Red Alinsod, who practices at South Coast Urogynecology and is a consultant for ThermiGyn (the developer and manufacturer of ThermiVa). There, Dr. Mikaelian saw firsthand how ThermiVa improved the lives of women. As Dr. Mikaelian has conducted this procedure, she has continued to see results.
What Is Involved in ThermiVa Treatment?
This non-hormonal energy treatment stimulates natural collagen remodeling in the body. ThermiVa is delivered as a series of treatments – three treatments over the course of three months. Many patients will start to see changes after the first appointment.
A ThermiVa session lasts approximately 30 to 40 minutes. The ThermiVa wand will be used over the external vaginal area, including the labia and surrounding skin. The ThermiVa wand can also be used inside the vagina to provide tightening.
There is no need for anesthesia, no downtime, and no discomfort with ThermiVa treatment. As a trained gynecologist, Dr. Mikaelian focuses on providing a comfortable experience for her patients.
How Long Do Results Last?
Many patients notice improvement in laxity and dryness immediately. As the collagen remodels over the next 4-6 weeks, the results become even more noticeable. Receiving the treatment for a total of three times over three months has been shown to give the most effective results.
There is no limit to the number of treatments a patient can have, as energy-based treatments do not thin out the skin. This is an important consideration when choosing a treatment.
Patients can repeat the procedure once a year after the initial series in order to maintain the improvements
Is ThermiVa Covered by Insurance?
ThermiVa is not covered by insurance regardless of whether the symptoms a woman wants to treat are functional or aesthetic.
