PERSONAL HISTORY
Dr. Susan Mikaelian was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just two weeks after her Armenian family fled civil unrest in Beirut, Lebanon, escaping from the country past bullet and rocket fire. She was raised in a close-knit Armenian community in Boston.
Her childhood and adolescence were shaped by the strong and confident women in her family and church, where she served as the organist and choir director from age 12 until she left for medical school. She is the eldest of two daughters, the first of her extended family to be born in the United States, and the first to obtain a doctoral degree.
While attending Loyola University in Chicago for medical school, she met her husband, Brad, who is now a practicing physician Colorado Springs. They married a few weeks before medical school graduation, and then they moved to Boston to complete their training and practice medicine.
Dr. Mikaelian lives in Colorado Springs with her husband and four sons. She took time to raise her sons, who are the joys of her life. Before returning to medicine, she served as an entrepreneur and business leader, offering health and wellness services to our community by opening and operating two fitness studios in Colorado Springs. The relationships and life-changing experiences that were established during this phase in her life reinforced her belief that true healthcare is about the whole person, and may be found outside the traditional path of medical practice.
Dr. Mikaelian continues her mission to empower women to lead healthy, fulfilling, and active lives. She strives to be a gynecologist who can counsel and address all her patients’ concerns regarding gynecologic and sexual health. She offers the full complement of modern surgical and nonsurgical treatments for both function and aesthetics, with treatments that provide high patient satisfaction, positive long-term benefits, and are exceptionally safe.
She understands that what may be the best for one woman may not be the ideal treatment for another. She looks forward to offering women newer options to make the best individual choices for their overall health and wellness.
DR. MIKAELIAN’S SPECIALTY
Dr. Mikaelian focuses her practice in the area of gynecology that addresses the functional as well as structural issues which can arise as women go through childbirth, aging, and menopause. These natural life processes can cause changes in the aesthetic appearance of the vulva and vagina, in addition to distressing medical symptoms and diminished sexual function.
Over time, these symptoms can progress and lead to significant life disruption. Some of these issues have not been fully addressed by healthcare professionals in the past, but they are a legitimate medical concern for many women.
Fortunately, there is a variety of new treatment options that can provide positive life-changing benefits for women – including both surgical and nonsurgical options – to address common gynecologic problems such as vaginal dryness, atrophy, sagging and laxity, leaking urine with coughing, and problems with sexual function after having children. Dr. Mikaelian is excited to provide many of these specialized treatments for women to help them regain both youthful function as well as enhanced aesthetic appearance in this area. She is looking forward to bringing her skill set and expertise to practice in this area, and to help tailor individual therapies for each woman.
